SAT words in context questions: how to answer them

Which word or phrase most logically and precisely completes a blank, or what a word means as it is used in the text.

Practise words in context →Timed module

What the question looks like

Each question has its own short text (a passage, a pair of texts, a table or a student's notes) and four options. The usual question is: Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

How to answer it

  1. Cover the options. Read the whole text and find the clue that tells you what the blank must mean: a contrast word (however, although, but), a cause (because, so), or an explanation after a colon.
  2. Say your own word for the blank before you look. A rough word is fine ('strong', 'unclear').
  3. Pick the option closest to your word, then reread the sentence with it in place.
  4. If two options seem close, check precision: does the word fit the exact situation, not just the general mood?

Common traps

In the harder second module

Hard questions use less common words, place the clue far from the blank, or need you to see that two clues work together. Learn the words, but the clue-first method is what scores in the second module.

Worked example

Worked example (easier)

The new bridge was designed to ______ heavy winds: its deck is shaped like an airplane wing, so strong gusts flow smoothly around it instead of pushing against its side.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. ignore
  2. produce
  3. predict
  4. withstand

Answer: D: withstand

The second half of the sentence explains how the deck lets gusts flow around it rather than push against it. A bridge built that way is designed to resist, or withstand, heavy winds.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: A structure cannot 'ignore' wind in any meaningful sense, and the text describes a design that actively deals with gusts.
  • B: The bridge does not create wind. The text describes wind coming from outside and flowing around the deck.
  • C: Nothing in the text says the bridge forecasts the weather; the shape of the deck is about coping with wind, not anticipating it.

Practice questions

Try each one before you open the answer. Every answer explains why the right option is right and why each of the other three is wrong. Answers to the first 4 are open to everyone; the rest need only a free account. Questions use American English, as the SAT does.

Question 1 (medium)

Early reviewers dismissed the novel as slight and sentimental, but its reputation has grown steadily. Critics now regard its quiet portrait of a family farm as ______, a book whose influence can be traced in dozens of later works about rural life.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. obscure
  2. derivative
  3. whimsical
  4. seminal
Show the answer and why each option is right or wrong

Answer: D: seminal

The book is described as one whose influence can be traced in many later works. A work that shapes what comes after it is seminal.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: Its reputation has grown and it influenced dozens of books, so it is hardly obscure.
  • B: Derivative means copied from earlier works, which reverses the relationship the text describes: later books borrow from this one.
  • C: Whimsical (playfully odd) does not fit a 'quiet portrait of a family farm', and it says nothing about influence.

Question 2 (hard)

Historians once assumed that the guild's detailed rulebook described how its members actually worked. Recent studies of surviving account books, however, suggest that the rules were often honored only in the ______: members routinely sold goods below the fixed prices the rulebook demanded.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. interim
  2. breach
  3. aggregate
  4. extreme
Show the answer and why each option is right or wrong

Answer: B: breach

To honor a rule 'in the breach' means to break it more often than follow it. The colon supports this: members routinely undercut the fixed prices.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: 'In the interim' means in the meantime, which makes no sense with 'honored only'.
  • C: 'In the aggregate' means taken as a whole, which would suggest the rules were broadly followed, contradicting the evidence after the colon.
  • D: 'Honored in the extreme' is not an idiom, and taken literally it would mean the rules were followed very strictly, the opposite of what the account books show.

Question 3 (hard)

Rather than ______ the disagreement between the two sources, the historian sets them side by side and explains why each author, given what he could see from his position in the city, might honestly have described the riot as he did.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. anticipating
  2. exacerbating
  3. arbitrating
  4. documenting
Show the answer and why each option is right or wrong

Answer: C: arbitrating

'Rather than' contrasts with what the historian actually does: she does not judge which source is right but explains both. To arbitrate is to settle a dispute by deciding between sides.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: The disagreement already exists in the sources, so it cannot be anticipated.
  • B: Exacerbating means making worse; nothing suggests the historian would inflame the disagreement.
  • D: Setting the sources side by side is itself a way of documenting the disagreement, so 'rather than documenting' contradicts the rest of the sentence.

Question 4 (hard)

Many visitors assume the garden's winding paths and wild-looking borders grew up by accident. In fact, the designer's notebooks show that its apparent disorder was carefully ______, with the position of nearly every plant planned years in advance.

Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?

  1. neglected
  2. contrived
  3. inherited
  4. disputed
Show the answer and why each option is right or wrong

Answer: B: contrived

Visitors think the disorder is accidental, but the notebooks show it was planned. Something deliberately arranged to look a certain way is contrived.

Why the other options are wrong

  • A: Neglect would produce real, accidental disorder, which is what the notebooks disprove.
  • C: Nothing suggests the designer took the layout over from someone else; the notebooks show her own planning.
  • D: No disagreement about the disorder is mentioned; the contrast is between accident and design.
