Learning objectives
- Volume & Surface Area of 3D Solids
- 3D Problems: Angles, Distances & Surface Area in Context
Key vocabulary
- slant height: The distance from the apex of a cone to the edge of its base.
- projection: The "shadow" of a line on a plane, used to measure the angle between them.
- composite solid: A solid made from two or more simpler solids.
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Triangles and 3D: wrong rule, wrong angle, missing units. Mark the given sides and the angle you want on a sketch before choosing the rule. Right angle: SOH CAH TOA. Otherwise sine or cosine rule. Add units to measurement answers.
- Using the vertical height where the slant height is needed (or the reverse).
- Adding the base of a hemisphere or cone when the question asks for the curved surface only.
Lesson plan
| 0–5 min | Do now: students write down what they remember about Distance & midpoint in 3D and Direct & inverse variation, cubic models |
| 5–8 min | Share the learning objective and success criteria |
| 8–20 min | Teach: the worked example, step by step; students copy the method |
| 20–25 min | Your turn: 1 mini-whiteboard question; check every board before moving on |
| 25–42 min | Practise: the worksheet (6 questions in 3 levels, with school plans and the teacher trial) or the topic's practice questions online; move up a level after two right in a row |
| 42–47 min | Plenary: 1-question exit ticket; collect it to plan the next lesson |
