Peer tutoring and teaching · Maths CAS idea
Build a maths games lending library
ServiceProject-ready
Collect, make and catalogue maths games that families or a primary school can borrow, with simple instructions you write.
Where the maths comes in
Choosing and adapting games to practise specific skills, and writing clear rules.
Which CAS strand it fits
- Service: Unpaid, voluntary work with others that also has a learning benefit for you.
Your CAS coordinator decides how an experience counts at your school. Strand summaries are provisional (our words, being checked).
How to run it
- Find a partner (a primary school or library) and ask what they would use.
- Collect donated games and make some of your own.
- Write instruction cards and a catalogue.
- Run the lending and check which games are used.
This can grow into a CAS project if your CAS coordinator agrees: see planning a maths CAS project.
How to evidence it
- Catalogue and instruction cards
- Lending records (no personal details beyond what the partner holds)
- Partner feedback
Date everything and keep it in your school's CAS portfolio as you go. More on what counts as evidence.
Reflection prompts
Questions to think about, not answers to copy. Write your reflections in your own words, in whatever form your school accepts.
- How did the partner's needs change which games you chose?
- What made an instruction card easy to follow?
- How will the library continue after you finish?
Learning outcomes this often gives a chance to show
- Initiative and planning. What did you plan, and what did you have to change once you started? Who did you need to ask for permission or help, and how did you go about it?
- Commitment and perseverance. When did you feel like stopping, and what kept you going? What does your record of sessions or meetings show about how regularly you took part?
- Global significance. How does the local need you worked on connect to a wider issue? What did you learn about that issue that you did not know before?
Whether you meet an outcome depends on what you actually do and reflect on, not on the idea. Outcome labels are our short summaries, being checked.
Safety and ethics
- The partner organisation manages any personal details of borrowers.
