Run a maths homework help drop-in

Service

Staff a weekly drop-in in the library where any younger student can bring maths homework and get help.

Where the maths comes in

Thinking on your feet across many topics and guiding, not doing, the homework.

Which CAS strand it fits

  • Service: Unpaid, voluntary work with others that also has a learning benefit for you.

Your CAS coordinator decides how an experience counts at your school. Strand summaries are provisional (our words, being checked).

How to run it

  1. Agree a time, place and supervising adult.
  2. Prepare a few quick-reference sheets of your own.
  3. Run the drop-in and keep a log of topics.
  4. Share the most common topics with the maths department.

How to evidence it

  • Log of topics and numbers attending
  • Your reference sheets
  • A note from the supervising teacher

Date everything and keep it in your school's CAS portfolio as you go. More on what counts as evidence.

Reflection prompts

Questions to think about, not answers to copy. Write your reflections in your own words, in whatever form your school accepts.

  • How did you stop yourself from doing a student's homework for them?
  • Which topic came up most, and why do you think that is?
  • How did turning up every week feel by the end of term?

Learning outcomes this often gives a chance to show

  • Commitment and perseverance. When did you feel like stopping, and what kept you going? What does your record of sessions or meetings show about how regularly you took part?
  • Strengths and growth. Which part of this did you find easiest, and why do you think that is? What would someone who watched you say you need to work on?
  • Ethics. What choice in this experience had a right and a wrong way to do it? Whose interests did you have to protect (privacy, safety, fairness), and how?

Whether you meet an outcome depends on what you actually do and reflect on, not on the idea. Outcome labels are our short summaries, being checked.

Safety and ethics

  • Help students understand; do not complete graded work for them.
  • Supervised space, school hours.

Agree every plan with your CAS coordinator first. Safety and ethics for maths CAS.
