Kitchen maths with a community group
Service
Help a community cooking group with the maths of scaling recipes, costing meals and portion sizes, working alongside their volunteers.
Where the maths comes in
Ratio, proportion, unit cost and estimation in a real setting.
Which CAS strand it fits
- Service: Unpaid, voluntary work with others that also has a learning benefit for you.
Your CAS coordinator decides how an experience counts at your school. Strand summaries are provisional (our words, being checked).
How to run it
- Contact a group through your CAS coordinator and ask how you could help.
- Make simple scaling and costing sheets, checked by the organiser.
- Attend sessions regularly.
- Ask the organiser whether the sheets are used.
How to evidence it
- Your sheets and later versions
- Attendance
- Organiser's comments
Date everything and keep it in your school's CAS portfolio as you go. More on what counts as evidence.
Reflection prompts
Questions to think about, not answers to copy. Write your reflections in your own words, in whatever form your school accepts.
- What did you learn from the people who run the group?
- How did real constraints (budgets, equipment) change your maths?
- What did you notice about food and cost in your community?
Learning outcomes this often gives a chance to show
- Global significance. How does the local need you worked on connect to a wider issue? What did you learn about that issue that you did not know before?
- Collaboration. What did someone else bring that you could not have done alone? Describe a disagreement or a mix-up in the team. How was it resolved?
- Challenge and new skills. What could you not do at the start that you can do now? Which moment felt most uncomfortable, and what did you do next?
Whether you meet an outcome depends on what you actually do and reflect on, not on the idea. Outcome labels are our short summaries, being checked.
Safety and ethics
- Follow the group's food hygiene rules.
- Work through the organisation's volunteer process.
