Learning objectives
- Unit Circle: Trig Ratios of Any Angle & Exact Values
- The Pythagorean & Double-Angle Identities
- Exact Values with the Double-Angle Identities
- Simple Identity Proofs
- Using Identities & Transformed Arguments (e.g. sin 2x, cos(x + π/3))
- Double-Angle Identities in Equations
Key vocabulary
- double-angle formula: An identity writing a function of 2θ in terms of θ.
- factorise: Write as a product so that each factor can be set to zero.
- identity: A statement true for all values.
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Trigonometric equations: one solution only, and exact values not known. Sketch the graph over the given interval and count the solutions before you start. Learn the exact values for 0, π/6, π/4, π/3, π/2 and their related angles.
- Writing sin 2θ = 2sin θ.
- Dividing by sin x and losing the solutions where sin x = 0.
Lesson plan
| 0–5 min | Do now: students write down what they remember about Arc length & sector area and Radian measure |
| 5–8 min | Share the learning objective and success criteria |
| 8–20 min | Teach: the worked example, step by step; students copy the method |
| 20–25 min | Your turn: 1 mini-whiteboard question; check every board before moving on |
| 25–42 min | Practise: the worksheet (6 questions in 3 levels, with school plans and the teacher trial) or the topic's practice questions online; move up a level after two right in a row |
| 42–47 min | Plenary: 1-question exit ticket; collect it to plan the next lesson |
