Learning objectives
- Solving sin/cos/tan Equations
- Solving Trig Equations: Every Solution in an Interval
- Quadratic-Type Equations in sin, cos & tan
- Equations Reducing to tan x = k & Factorising
- Counting & Checking Solutions with Technology
Key vocabulary
- principal value: The value the calculator's inverse key gives.
- interval: The range of values solutions must lie in.
- period: The length after which the graph repeats (2π for sin, cos; π for tan).
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Trigonometric equations: one solution only, and exact values not known. Sketch the graph over the given interval and count the solutions before you start. Learn the exact values for 0, π/6, π/4, π/3, π/2 and their related angles.
- Giving only the calculator value.
- Not changing the interval for 2x or x + π/3.
Lesson plan
| 0–5 min | Do now: students write down what they remember about Trig identities (Pythagorean, double-angle) and Arc length & sector area |
| 5–8 min | Share the learning objective and success criteria |
| 8–20 min | Teach: the worked example, step by step; students copy the method |
| 20–25 min | Your turn: 1 mini-whiteboard question; check every board before moving on |
| 25–42 min | Practise: the worksheet (6 questions in 3 levels, with school plans and the teacher trial) or the topic's practice questions online; move up a level after two right in a row |
| 42–47 min | Plenary: 1-question exit ticket; collect it to plan the next lesson |
