SAT Math mixed review practice: 4 mixed sets with answer keys

Four mixed sets that cover all four domains in one sitting: algebra, advanced math, problem-solving and data analysis, and geometry and trigonometry. Use one as a warm-up before a full practice test: the questions come in no particular order, as on the real test, so you have to spot the topic yourself.

The sets were written for IB Higher Level students, so a few questions go a little beyond the SAT. Every question is our own: none is from College Board.

Worked Examples: SAT Strategy

Example 1: Easy (Spot the Multiple)

Question: If $3x - 5 = 16$, what is the value of $6x - 10$?
SAT Strategy: Look at what the question asks for before solving: $6x - 10$ is $2(3x - 5)$.
  1. $6x - 10 = 2(3x - 5)$.
  2. $= 2 \times 16 = 32$.
  3. Check by solving: $x = 7$, and $6(7) - 10 = 32$.
  4. Answer: $32$.

Example 2: Medium (Scaling a Volume)

Question: A cylinder has radius $3$ and height $5$. A second cylinder has twice the radius and the same height. How many times the volume of the first cylinder is the volume of the second?
SAT Strategy: In $V = \pi r^2 h$ the radius is squared, so doubling it multiplies the volume by $2^2$.
  1. First: $V = \pi (3)^2 (5) = 45\pi$.
  2. Second: $V = \pi (6)^2 (5) = 180\pi$.
  3. $\frac{180\pi}{45\pi} = 4$.
  4. Answer: $4$.

Example 3: Hard (Halving Over Several Periods)

Question: The amount of a medicine in the body halves every $6$ hours. What percent of the original dose is left after $18$ hours?
SAT Strategy: Count the halving periods first: the amount is multiplied by $\frac{1}{2}$ once per period.
  1. $\frac{18}{6} = 3$ halving periods.
  2. Fraction left $= \left(\frac{1}{2}\right)^3 = \frac{1}{8}$.
  3. $\frac{1}{8} = 0.125 = 12.5\%$.
  4. Answer: $12.5$.
