AI — real-world modelling
Best for: economics, business, social sciences, biology, most engineering routes, computer science, data-heavy careers.
You'll enjoy this if you like: statistics, calculator work, seeing where the maths comes from, real datasets, and being able to explain what your answer means.
AA — abstract analysis
Best for: pure maths, theoretical physics, Cambridge / Imperial engineering, actuarial science, quant finance.
You'll enjoy this if you like: algebraic proof, elegant calculus, complex numbers, and don't mind pages of manipulation.

Which is right for you?
You want to study pure mathematics, theoretical physics, or engineering at Cambridge / Imperial
These programmes explicitly list AA HL in their entry requirements (or the equivalent). AA HL is functionally non-negotiable.

You want economics, business, biology, computer science, or general engineering
Universities have overwhelmingly accepted AI HL for these subjects since 2020. AI HL statistics is arguably more relevant for a data-driven modern career than AA HL calculus.

You need Maths for the Diploma but it isn't your favourite subject
Take the standard-level route of whichever course best matches your predicted university. Do not take AA SL just because it sounds more prestigious — a poor grade in AA SL blocks more doors than a strong grade in AI SL.

You're a natural at proof and hate context questions
AA rewards abstract thinking. AI rewards interpretation. If a paper full of "explain what this means in context" makes you groan, AI will grind you down.

Is IB Maths AI easier than AA?
AI is generally considered less abstract. AI focuses on real-world data and calculator-heavy techniques; AA leans into algebraic proof and calculus manipulation. Neither is 'easier' — they suit different mathematical minds. AI students still tackle sophisticated statistics (chi-squared, t-tests, regression) that AA students never see.
Do universities accept IB Maths AI for STEM degrees?
Most universities accept AI HL for engineering, computer science, and economics. AA HL is required or strongly preferred for pure mathematics, theoretical physics, and top-tier engineering programmes (e.g. Cambridge, Imperial). Always check the specific course entry requirements — the landscape has shifted noticeably since 2019.
What topics are in IB Maths AI that AA doesn't have?
AI covers voronoi diagrams, graph theory, matrices for transformations and Markov chains, chi-squared tests, t-tests, and 2×2 systems for dynamic modelling. AA covers deeper calculus, complex numbers, proof by induction and pure algebra topics that AI omits.
Can I switch from AA to AI mid-Diploma?
Most schools allow a switch during DP1 (up to ~6 months in). It's much harder in DP2 because the topic overlap is only ~60% and the exam styles differ significantly. Talk to your DP coordinator before Christmas of DP1 if you're wavering.
Which is more work — AI SL or AA SL?
Both are the same official 150 teaching hours. Anecdotally students report AI SL feels lighter because the maths is more contextualised; AA SL requires more abstract manipulation. But the IA (exploration) is the same weight in both.
