Learning objectives
- Differentiating Powers of x
- Differentiating Sums & Constant Multiples
- Negative Integer Powers, Rewriting Expressions & Gradient at a Point
Key vocabulary
- derivative: The gradient function f′(x) or dy/dx.
- rate of change: How fast one quantity changes compared with another.
- second derivative: The derivative of the derivative.
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Calculus: not differentiating, f(a) for f′(a), and the derivative as a rate. Gradient at a point = f′(a). Normal gradient = −1/f′(a). Finish with the equation y − y₁ = m(x − x₁). A derivative value is an instantaneous rate with units "per …". When integrating, add C and find it.
- Differentiating a quotient term by term without splitting it first.
- (d/dx)(x⁻²) = −2x⁻¹ (the power should go down to −3).
Lesson plan
| 0–5 min | Do now: students write down what they remember about Rate of change (gradient interpretation) and Sampling techniques & data collection |
| 5–8 min | Share the learning objective and success criteria |
| 8–20 min | Teach: the worked example, step by step; students copy the method |
| 20–25 min | Your turn: 1 mini-whiteboard question; check every board before moving on |
| 25–42 min | Practise: the worksheet (4 questions in 3 levels, with school plans and the teacher trial) or the topic's practice questions online; move up a level after two right in a row |
| 42–47 min | Plenary: 1-question exit ticket; collect it to plan the next lesson |
