Learning objectives
- Summary statistics: averages and spread
Key vocabulary
- mean: The sum of the values divided by the number of values.
- median: The middle value of the ordered data.
- modal class: The class with the highest frequency (density).
- outlier: A value far from the rest of the data.
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Basic statistics: range as an interval, frequency tables, outlier fences, Spearman's ranks. Range = largest − smallest (one number). Enter values and frequencies as two lists on the GDC. An outlier is beyond Q₁ − 1.5 × IQR or Q₃ + 1.5 × IQR; compare the actual data with the fence. Spearman's is between the ranks of the two variables.
- Dividing Σ fx by the number of classes instead of Σ f.
- Using class boundaries instead of midpoints for an estimated mean.
