Learning objectives
- Independent and mutually exclusive events
Key vocabulary
- independent: One event happening does not change the probability of the other.
- mutually exclusive: The events cannot happen together.
- intersection: A ∩ B: both events happen.
Common mistakes this lesson tackles
- Probability: assuming independence, and conditional probability with complements. Only multiply when independence is given or proved. Find P(A ∩ B) from the addition rule or a Venn diagram, then use P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B)/P(B), writing the events in context.
- Mixing up independent and mutually exclusive.
- Assuming independence to calculate P(A ∩ B) without it being given.
Lesson plan
| 0–5 min | Do now: students write down what they remember about Conditional probability and Sample-space diagrams & tree diagrams |
| 5–8 min | Share the learning objective and success criteria |
| 8–20 min | Teach: the worked example, step by step; students copy the method |
| 20–25 min | Your turn: 1 mini-whiteboard question; check every board before moving on |
| 25–42 min | Practise: the worksheet (4 questions in 3 levels, with school plans and the teacher trial) or the topic's practice questions online; move up a level after two right in a row |
